Home Back

We have every reason to believe that the important investigation, in which the Rev. Samuel Marsden and Dr. Douglass are the parties concerned, is now pending. The Commissioners, appointed by Earl Bathurst to adjust the merits of this mighty question, consist of the Governor in Chief, the Chief Justice, and the Archdeacon. In this transaction many events are involved that are certainly of a blackening cast, and which must prove ruinous to those who may perchance be found guilty of offenses that we dare not, under present circumstances, attempt to disclose. We can go so far, however, to say, that the Constituted Authorities (particularly ONE) have been most scandalously attacked both in their public and private character, by certain Correspondences that they transmitted to the Ministry some two or three years since. The truth will force a way for itself. Woe be to the calumniators, unless all interested have declared the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
