IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER SON AND HOLY GHOST Three Persons but one God I, WILLIAM PHILLIPS of Lyndhurst in the New Forrest and County of Southampton Gentleman being through infinite mercy of a sound composed mind memory and understanding knowing the certainty of death and the uncertainty when I shall be called by it to my wished for long home do make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following Imprimis in sure and certain hope of a resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ I commit my body to the dust to be buried in a plain decent manner and I commend my Soul into the hands of the Everlasting altogether lovely never failing Jesus on whose compleat and everlasting rightousness I entirely depend for the justification of my person when he shall come to judge both the quick and the dead And in respect to my worldly substance God has entrusted me with after all just debts funeral expenses and proving this my Will are paid and satisfied I do dispose thereof as follows (that is to say) I give devise and bequeath to the Revd. Adam Alldridge late of Amsbury in Wiltshire but now Preacher at the Meeting House of Lyndburst aforesaid All that my dwellinghouse chaise house shop stables and all other buildings garden and meadow land adjoining and thereto belonging to the same with all its appurtenances all which I purchased of my late brother Charles Phillips deceased subject to the payment of twenty shillings every Christmas yearly for the benefit of the poor at Lyndhurst aforesaid for ever being the Gift of Mrs Bennett deceased for which I received twenty pounds and charged it as aforesaid to prevent its being lost from the said poor being situated in Lyndhurst aforesaid and is now in my own possession To hold to him the said Adam Alldridge for and during his natural life only on this express condition that he the said Adam Alldridge do and shall without delay after my decease settle convey or otherwise place the same in the hands and possessions of proper trustees to take place at his decease for the use or support of the preaching of the Word of God at the Meeting House at Lyndhurst aforesaid for ever and in case such preaching should be discontinued I direct the same to be applied towards a School for Teaching the poor children of Lyndhurst aforesaid for ever and I do hereby give unto the said Adam Alldridge full and absolute power and authority to settle the same accordingly Also I give and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge all the dividends or interest of twelve hundred and fifty pounds of my four P cent Bank Annuities for and during his natural life only on this express condition that the said Adam Alldridge do and shall without delay after my decease settle the said dividends or interest of the said twelve hundred and fifty pounds of four P Cent Bank Annuities in proper trustees hands to take place at his decease for the support of the Preaching of the word of God at the Meeting House of Lyndhurst aforesaid and also for the support of a School for teaching the poor children of the said parish of Lyndhurst for ever And I do hereby give unto the said Adam Alldridge full and absolute power and authority to settle the same accordingly and I order the expenses of the aforesaid trust deeds or writings to be paid for out of my personal estate Also I give devise and bequeath to said Adam Alldridge and Mr William Downer of Millbrook Surgeon all that my freehold meadow land that I purchased of William Rhodes of Salisbury Carpenter situated in Lyndhurst aforesaid In trust for the only use and benefit of my sister in law Mary Waterman late Widow of my said brother Charles Phillips deceased and now wife of Farmer James Waterman for and during her natural life only for her own separate use and maintenance to be at her own disposal only notwithstanding her coverture and from and after her decease I give devise and bequeath the same to James Waterman of Lyndhurst aforesaid Carpenter and nephew to the said Mary Waterman To hold to him the said James Waterman Carpenter for and during his natural life only and from and after his decease I give devise and bequeath the same to such child or children of him the said James Waterman as shall be then living share and share alike as tenants in common and not as joint tenants Also I give devise and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge and William Downer all that my copyhold dwellinghouse outhouses garden and orchard which I purchased of William Rhodes Basket Maker situated in Lyndhurst aforesaid with all its appurtenances In trust for the only use and benefit of my said sister in law Mary Waterman for and during her natural life only for her own separate use and maintenance and to be at her own disposal only notwithstanding her coverture and from and after her decease I give devise and bequeath the same to my trusted and faithful servant Thomas Hayles To hold to him and his assigns with full power to keep the lives filled up after my decease for his own benefit and which I have surrendered to the use of my Will Also I give devise and bequeath the said Adam Alldridge and William Downer all that copyhold dwellinghouse outhouses and land thereunto adjoining and belonging with all its appurtenances and a piece of Cottage ground also adjoining that I purchased of Robert Peirce and the said copyhold I purchased of John Preston and made a surrender of the same to the use of my Will and is situated in Lyndhurst aforesaid In trust for the only use and benefit of said sister in law Mary Waterman for and during her natural life only for her own separate use and maintenance and to be at her own disposal notwithstanding her coverture and from and after decease In trust for the only use and benefit of her husband the said Farmer James Waterman for and during his natural life and from and after his decease I give devise and bequeath the same to the said James Waterman Carpenter to hold to him his heirs and assigns with full power to keep the same full stated after my decease for the benefit of himself and family Also I give devise and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge and William Downer all that my dwellinghouse barn stable outhouses garden and land thereunto belonging with all its appurtenances situated in Lyndhurst aforesaid and all that my leasehold land situated in the Manor of Minsteed with all its appurtenances all which I lately purchased of John Davis and is now in his possession as tenant thereof In trust for the only use and benefit of my said sister in law Mary Waterman for and during her natural life only to enable her to assist and apply the same for the benefit of such of her own relations as may be in need of the same at her own discretion only notwithstanding her coverture my meaning is that neither her present or any future husband she may marry shall have any power or control over the same of this or any of the aforesaid trust legacies given by me to the said Mary Waterman and from and after the decease of the said Mary Waterman In trust for the only benefit and advantage of Elizabeth Tickner niece of the said Mary Waterman and her children in any manner to do them the most good at the discretion of my said trustees And whereas I have agreed that the said John Davis shall have the full liberty to repurchase the said premises at any time within two years from the date of the Conveyance thereof in case this takes place it will make this legacy void therefore instead thereof I give and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge and William Downer the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds of lawful money of England In trust to pay the same out on interest and to pay the said interest to her the said Mary Waterman for and during her natural life only to enable her to assist and apply the same for the benefit of such of her own relations as may be in need of the same at her discretion only notwithstanding her coverture and from and after the decease of the said Mary Waterman In trust for the benefit and advantage of the said Elizabeth Tickner niece of the said Mary Waterman and her children And I empower my said trustees to employ both interest and principal for the benefit of the said Elizabeth Tickner and her children at their discretion and that her husband Thos Tickner shall have nothing to do with the same but in case the said John Davis do not purchase the aforesaid premises within the time mentioned I do then empower my said trustees to sell the same in case it appears to them to answer better for the purpose of providing for the said Elizabeth Tickner and her children at their discretion Also I give devise and bequeath to William Godwin (brother of the said Mary Waterman) of Winchester Turner and Rebecca his wife all that my two dwellinghouses or tenements brewhouse and garden with all its appurtenances situate in Kingsgate Street at Winchester aforesaid and is now in his own possession to hold to them and their heirs and I do release him from the payment of any rent or debt that may be due from him to me at my decease Also I give devise and bequeath to my cousin Thomas Woods of Haslemere in the County of Surry Attorney at Law all that my freehold dwellinghouse malthouse barn stables and all other buildings garden and lands thereunto belonging together with all its appurts situate in and near Bridge Street at Godalming in Surry aforesaid to hold to him the said Thomas Woods his heirs and assigns for ever upon this express condition that he pays or causes to be paid one annuity of ten pounds and ten shillings yearly by quarterly payments to Susanna Perry of Lyndhurst aforesaid Widow who is about seventy years of age as it becomes due the first payment to be made on the first quarter day next after my decease on September 29th December 21st March 25th and June 24th that is to say the sum of two pounds twelve shillings and six pence every quarter of a year for and during the term of her natural life to be paid her in the Parish of Lyndhurst aforesaid free and clear from any expense whatever in discharge of a Bond I have given her for that purpose which said annuity together with every expense that may attend the recovery thereof I hereby charge my said freehold estate at Godalming aforesaid with the payment thereof also on condition that the said Thomas Woods pays unto his brother John Woods of Rake near Godalming aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds of like lawful money within two years after my decease and also on condition that the said Thomas Woods pays unto his brother Henry Woods of Godalming aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds of like money within two years after my decease and also to pay for a heriot in case it can be lawfully demanded after my decease all which I charge my said estate at Godalming with the payment thereof Also I give and bequeath to my sister in law Sarah Phillips of Newington Green Middlesex Widow of my late brother John Phillips deceased the sum of one hundred pounds of like money for mourning and my silver waiter marked with a cypher T.S.P. in case she be living at my decease Also I give and bequeath to the said Farmer James Waterman and Mary his wife the sum of one hundred pounds of like lawful money and twenty pounds for mourning and all my wearing apparel of all sorts all my silver shoe buckle silver knee buckles silver sleeve buttons and studs Also I give and bequeath to Richard Skeat of Basingstoke in the County of Southampton Gentleman and John Goody of the same Town Apothecary the sum of five hundred pounds of like money in trust to pay the interest of the same to my cousin William Phillips now or late of Basingstoke aforesaid Staymaker for and during his natural life only and from and after his decease In trust to pay the said principal sum of five hundred pounds and all interest due thereon to the three sons and two daughters of the said William Phillips or such of them as shall be then living equally between them share and share alike but if any of them shall be then dead leaving a child or children then such child or children shall have the parents part share and share alike also I give and bequeath to the said Richard Skeat and John Covey one guinea each for mourning rings Also I give and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge and William Downer the sum of three hundred pounds of like money in trust to put the same out on interest and to pay the interest thereof to my said sister in law Mary Waterman for and during her natural life only for her own separate use only for which her receipt alone shall be a sufficient discharge to my said trustees for the same notwithstanding her coverture but the said Mary Waterman shall give up to m y said trustees a Bond to be cancelled that I gave her to pay her an annuity of five shillings a week before she shall be entitled to the said interest money as I have now better provided for her and from and after her decease I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred pounds part of the said principal money to the said James Waterman Carpenter and nephew to the said Mary Waterman but in case of his death equally between this children share and share alike also from and after her decease I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred pounds a further part of the said principal money to all the children of the said Elizabeth Tickner with all the interest that my said trustees can make of the same at their age of twenty one years equally between them share and share alike also from and after the decease of the said Mary Waterman I give and bequeath the remainder sum of one hundred pounds of the said principal money to Mary Waterman niece of the said Mary Waterman and sister to the said Elizabeth Tickner Also I give and bequeath to James >Waterman the father of the said Elizabeth Tickner the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to my cousin Ann Woods of Godalming aforesaid Widow the sum of twenty pounds of like money for mourning Also I give and bequeath to the said William Downer the sum of one hundred pounds of like money for his trouble of being my trustee and executor Also I give and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge the sum of one hundred pounds of like money for his trouble of being my trustee and executor Also I give devise and bequeath to Phillip Carteret Webb of Milford House near Godalming in Surry Esquire all my reversional interest and claim unto the real and personal estates of the late Mrs Sarah Meale deceased which I myself or heirs may hereafter be intitled unto under her Will in case of the death of his wife and son without issue to hold to the said Philip Carteret Webb his heirs and assigns for ever Also I give and bequeath the said Philip Carteret Webb his wife Mary Webb and their son Philip Smith Webb Esquire five guineas each for rings Also I give and bequeath to the said Philip Smith Webb my Shagreen tea chest mounted with silver and my three wrought silver cannisters belonging to the same and Whereas I am the surviving executor and trustee in and by the last Will and Testament of the said Sarah Meale now it is my Will and desire that such of the trust under the said Will as shall remain to be executed at the time of my decease shall go to devolve upon and be vested in Thomas Hall the younger of Preston Candover in Hants Esquire and William Gill of Eashing in Surry Esquire to be by them acted in and upon performed and executed according to and in pursuance of the said Will of the said Sarah Meale and for that purpose I hereby order and direct my executors hereinafter named to do execute and perform all and every act and acts conveyances and assignments or other proper instruments as may be needful and necessary for the vesting in the said Thomas Hall and William Gill and giving them power over all and every the estate and effects of the said Sarah Meale my said executors being indemnified as to all costs and charges attending the same and I make this appointment at the request privity and consent of the said Mary Webb the person to be benefited thereby Also I give and bequeath to the said William Downer and Adam Alldridge five hundred pounds of my three per cent Consolidated Bank Annuities In trust as follows (that is to say) I give and bequeath the dividends or interest of the same to my faithful and trusty servant Elizabeth Rottenbury for and during her natural life only and from and after her decease I give and bequeath to my aforesaid servant Thomas Hayles one hundred pounds of the said three per cent Bank Annuities also from and after her decease I give and bequeath to all the children of the said Elizabeth Tickner one hundred pounds of the said three per cent Bank Annuities equally between them share and share alike also from and after her decease I give and bequeath to all the children of the said James Waterman Carpenter one hundred pounds of the said three per cent Bank Annuities equally between them share and share alike Also from and after her decease I give and bequeath to Richard Waterman of Lyndhurst aforesaid Carpenter one hundred pounds of the said three per cent Bank annuities Also from and after her decease I give and bequeath to all the children of the late John Hinves of Lyndhurst aforesaid Maltster deceased the remainder one hundred pounds of the said three per cent Bank Annuities equally between them share and share alike And I do hereby give my said trustees full power over the same to pay the legacies given by me out of the said five hundred Pounds three per cent Consolidated Bank Annuities and in case the said Elizabeth Rottenbury shall be in my service at the time of my decease I further give and bequeath to her the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of England and ten pounds for mourning and in case the said Thomas Hayles shall be in my service at my decease I further give and bequeath to him the sum of one hundred pounds of like money and ten pounds for mourning Also I give and bequeath to James Plaskett the elder of Lyndlurst and his wife the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to the aforesaid Susanna Perry the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to Jane Abbott of Lyndhurst who lives with Henry Toombs Esquire the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to William Bist the elder of Lyndhurst the sum of fifty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to Aaron Hinves of Lyndhurst Cordwainer the sum of fifty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to Farmer John Bevis of Lynhurst and his wife the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I further give and bequeath to the said William Godwin of Winchester the sum of fifty pounds of like lawful money Also I give and bequeath to Mr. Thomas Bullock of New Park near Lyndhurst the sum of fifty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to Charles Carpenter of Minsteed the sum of twenty pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to his brother George Carpenter of Minsteed the sum of ten pounds of like money Also I give and bequeath to their sister Ann Peirce wife of William Peirce of Langley the sum of thirty pounds of like money Also I order that my horse and chaise and harness and its appurts to be sold after my decease for the best price that can be got and the whole of the money arising from the sale thereof to be laid out in the purchasing Blankets or covering for beds by my executors in the best manner they can and distribute the same among the poor families living in Lyndhurst aforesaid at their discretion Also I give and bequeath to my said sister in law Mary Waterman my four post bedstead with needle work furniture one feather bed one bolster two pillows three blanketts and one white counterpane the best she can chuse and my coloured counterpane India Pattern two pair of fine large sheets two pair common large sheets and two pair common large sheets and two pair small sheets and six pair of pillow cases such as she likes to chuse six of my silver table spoons three silver dessert spoons marked with a cypher W.P. silver tea spoons and pair of silver tea tongs and two silver salt shovels marked W.P. and my silver common pepper castor one equal half part of all my table cloths napkins and towels and the whole of my toilet table and linen covering belonging thereto and my mahogany elbow night chair and pewter pan belonging to it my wainscot desk one mahogany elbow chair with stuffed seat and bath with a green and white checks case Also one equal half part of all my china glass ware tea and sugar canisters glass bottles bacon cheese liquor of all sorts tea sugar and other provisions that may be in my house and premises at my decease also my large corn binn in my stable and my painted corn chest in the shop and ten of my printed books that is likely to be most useful for her and her husband also two useful looking glasses Also I give and bequeath to the said Adam Alldridge my Gold stock buckle and sleeve buttons and all the remainder of my household goods and furniture pictures plate china linen glass and other implements of household and all my dead stock that may be found in my house and premises that I now live in except my deals Carpenters work bench and all my carpenters and Joiners tools and tool chest which I give and bequeath to the aforesaid James Waterman Carpenter and as I expect the said Adam Alldridge will immediately inhabit my house &c after my decease I also expect that he will without delay settle such household furniture and goods as will be useful to any succeeding Ministers after his decease as to go as heirlooms to the said house and I further expect that he will with the help of God after my decease without delay settle and forward everything in his power to promote and carry on the work of God at Lyndhurst aforesaid both in his lifetime and after his decease And I give and bequeath to him the said Adam Alldridge the sum of one hundred pounds of like money to fit up a School house in part of my said buildings and to enable him to teach the poor children of Lyndhurst aforesaid all the rest residue and remainder of my estate and effects of what nature or kind soever or wheresoever which at the time of my decease I shall be possessed of or interested in or intitled unto I give devise and bequeath the same to the said William Downer and Adam Alldridge In trust to put the same out on interest and from time to time to apply the interest in teaching and cloathing poor children living in the Parish of Lyndhurst aforesaid and also In trust to settle the principal in future to do all the aged they can for the poor inhabitants of Lyndhurst aforesaid and I hereby give them my said trustees full power and authority so to do at their discretion and if it should so happen that I have not left any of the aforesaid legacies in a lawful and legal manner to prevent any advantage being taken thereof I do hereby give devise and bequeath such legacy or legacies unto the said William Downer and Adam Alldridge In trust to be disposed of by them at their discretion for ever And I nominate constitute and appoint the said William Downer and Adam Alldridge executors of this my Will and I revoke and make void all other Will or Wills by me heretofore made and I do declare this only to be my last Will and Testament wrote with my own weak and infirm hand contained in three sheets of paper IN WITNESS whereof I have to the two first sheets set my hand and to the third and last sheet
