The MILITARY GOVERNMENT possessed by the city is another of its peculiar privileges, possessed from the earliest times, and its forces, amounting to 18,600, (viz., six regiments of trained bands, six auxiliary regiments, and one regiment of horse) assembled in Hyde-park, were judged to have been highly instrumental in restoring the monarchy under Charles II.
